When exploring traditional Greek cuisine, most people quickly discover classics like Moussaka, Souvlaki, and Spanakopita. Yet among Greece’s regional specialties is a hidden gem from the island of Crete—Sfakianopita, a delicate sweet cheese pie with deep roots in Cretan tradition.
What Is Sfakianopita?
Sfakianopita is a traditional pie originating from the mountainous region of Sfakia in southern Crete. Unlike many Greek pies made with layers of phyllo dough, Sfakianopita uses a very thin handmade dough similar to a soft flatbread.
The pie is filled with fresh soft cheese—traditionally Mizithra or sometimes Anthotyros—and cooked in a pan until lightly golden. It is then drizzled with fragrant Cretan honey, creating a perfect balance between sweet and savory flavors.
Ingredients
Dough
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup warm water (approximate)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Filling
- 1½ cups fresh mizithra or anthotyros cheese (crumbled)
For Cooking
- 2–3 tablespoons olive oil or butter
Topping
- 3–4 tablespoons Greek honey (preferably thyme honey)
How Sfakianopita Is Made
The dough is prepared by mixing flour, salt, olive oil, and water until soft and smooth. After resting, it is divided into small balls and rolled into thin circles.
A spoonful of the soft cheese is placed in the center of the dough, then covered with another thin layer of dough and gently flattened into a small round pie.
The pies are cooked slowly in a lightly oiled pan until golden brown on both sides. Once hot and crispy, they are drizzled with honey before serving.
When and How It’s Served
Sfakianopita is incredibly versatile and can be enjoyed:
- As a traditional Cretan breakfast
- As a light dessert
- As a snack with coffee
- As part of a meze spread
It is best served warm so the cheese stays soft and the honey melts into the crust.
