Located at 420 East 59th Street near Sutton Place in Midtown East, Nostos opened its doors early last month, bringing an authentic taste of Greece to one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods.

Named after the Greek word nostos, which signifies a homecoming or the longing to return home, the restaurant embraces the comforting feeling of being welcomed like family—a sentiment deeply connected to the Greek way of life.

Inspired by cherished family recipes, lively gatherings around the table, and the timeless tradition of filoxenia (Greek hospitality), founders Alina Borys, Stefania Papadopoulos, Panos Seretis, and brothers George and Kosta Tsampas have created an elevated taverna experience that celebrates the food and warmth they grew up with.

Nostos blends refined design with a welcoming atmosphere, offering a space that feels both sophisticated and inviting. The restaurant strikes a balance between relaxed comfort and vibrant energy, making guests feel right at home while enjoying an unforgettable Greek dining experience.

Nostos offers both spacious indoor and outdoor seating, featuring a sophisticated design with warm earthy tones, vibrant blue and turquoise accents, and elegant gold details that create a space that is both stylish and welcoming.

One of the restaurant’s standout features is its Art Deco antique copper bar, a historic centerpiece discovered during renovations. The interior also incorporates wave-inspired wall designs that pay tribute to the beauty of the Mediterranean Sea.

Lush landscaping adds to the tranquil atmosphere, giving the restaurant the feel of a colorful Mediterranean garden. Rather than completely transforming the space, the owners chose to preserve its character, believing that a place with history already possesses its own unique charm.

Speaking with The National Herald, co-managing owner Stefania Papadopoulos said the name Nostos was chosen because it captures the feeling of returning home.

“Our goal was to create a place that feels like home,” Papadopoulos explained. “All of our partners value family, and we wanted to build an environment where people feel welcomed, comfortable, and leave feeling happy and fulfilled.”

She added that the menu reflects the same philosophy, featuring daily specials inspired by the meals they grew up eating and the dishes their families continue to prepare at home.

Before becoming Nostos, the location was home to Mykonian Garden, a Greek restaurant operated by Poland-born Alina Borys and her former husband. The restaurant closed just six months after opening, and following the couple’s separation, Borys planned to sell the property. That was when Stefania Papadopoulos’ father, Lakis, proposed a new path forward—a business partnership that ultimately led to the creation of Nostos.

For Papadopoulos, opening a restaurant was a natural progression. Growing up in a family deeply rooted in the hospitality industry, she was surrounded by the business from an early age. She began working in restaurants at just 14 years old, gaining experience as a hostess, waitress, and manager. Those years equipped her with the skills and confidence to help lead Nostos today.

Her passion for hospitality also comes from her family’s love of entertaining.

“We’ve always loved welcoming people into our home,” Papadopoulos said. “We enjoy hosting, cooking, and creating memorable experiences, so we wanted to bring that same feeling into the restaurant.”

She added that the team also wanted to introduce something different to New York’s Greek dining scene. While they admire and support the city’s many Greek restaurants, they felt there was room for a concept that celebrated authentic mainland Greek cuisine rather than offering menus that felt too familiar.

Beyond the food, the founders envisioned Nostos as a vibrant gathering place where guests could enjoy traditional Greek nights, lively celebrations, and the warm sense of community that defines Greek culture.

Describing the restaurant’s identity, Stefania Papadopoulos says Nostos strikes the perfect balance between comfort and sophistication.

“It’s homey, but elegant,” she said. “It has the feel of an upscale Greek taverna.”

The menu showcases authentic Greek flavors with signature dishes such as beef, lamb, and seafood youvetsi, alongside a standout moussaka that has quickly become one of the restaurant’s biggest crowd-pleasers. Guests can also enjoy a wide selection of traditional spreads, fresh salads, soups, appetizers, seafood, premium meats, sides, and a raw bar.

“Our moussaka has been incredibly popular,” Papadopoulos said. “It’s one of our best-selling dishes.”

She also emphasized the restaurant’s commitment to quality, noting that the team sources premium cuts of meat through its partners’ longstanding industry connections. That same attention to detail extends to every ingredient.

“We never compromise on our olive oil, and we don’t use seed oils at all,” she explained.

Among the other customer favorites are the restaurant’s homemade spinach pies and spinach-and-cheese pies, handcrafted by an elderly husband-and-wife team from Epirus who bring generations of traditional baking expertise to every batch.

Despite being a newcomer to New York’s dining scene, Nostos recently earned the honor of hosting the official after-party for the annual New York Greek Independence Parade—an important milestone for the restaurant.

The celebration was a resounding success, with a packed house, live dancing, and an atmosphere full of excitement.

“It was an unforgettable experience,” Papadopoulos said. “The energy was incredible, everyone was celebrating, dancing, and having a wonderful time. Creating those moments for our guests is exactly what Nostos is all about. We know how to throw a true Greek celebration, and we’re proud to share that spirit with everyone who walks through our doors.”

Reflecting on the opportunity to host the official after-party for such a major community event, Stefania Papadopoulos described it as a meaningful milestone for the team.

“It was incredibly rewarding,” she said. “It’s really a testament to my father, Lakis, and my uncle, Pano, and their longstanding commitment to the Greek community, especially their involvement in organizing the Greek Independence Parade.”

Over the years, both men have played prominent leadership roles within New York’s Greek-American community. They have each served as presidents of the Patrinos Society and have long been recognized as influential figures in Astoria’s Greek community, helping strengthen connections and preserve Greek traditions for future generations.

Building on the success of both the Greek Independence Parade after-party and the restaurant’s Easter celebration, Papadopoulos said Nostos plans to begin hosting regular Greek nights starting next month.

The events will initially be held once a month, with the goal of eventually becoming a weekly tradition.

“We want to grow at the right pace,” she explained. “Our priority is making sure the service and overall experience remain exceptional before expanding. As we continue to build, we’ll be able to host even more Greek celebrations.”

The enthusiasm from guests has already exceeded expectations.

“People keep asking us to make it a weekly event,” Papadopoulos said with a smile. “We tell them to be patient because we want to do it properly. Everyone who came to our Easter celebration or the parade after-party keeps asking when the next Greek night will be. They want to come back, dance, and celebrate—and what’s even more exciting is that many of them aren’t even Greek. They simply love the atmosphere and want to be part of it.”

Asked about the response since opening, Stefania Papadopoulos said the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with guests consistently praising the restaurant’s food.

“We’ve been hearing so many wonderful things, especially about the quality of our food, and that’s incredibly important to us,” she said.

Papadopoulos also noted that the warm personalities behind Nostos have helped create a welcoming atmosphere. Guests have quickly come to know and appreciate co-founder Alina Borys, as well as her father, Lakis, who are often seen greeting diners and interacting with customers alongside Papadopoulos herself.

“People really enjoy seeing familiar faces,” she said. “Alina, my dad, and I are all very present in the restaurant, and we love connecting with our guests.”

Reflecting on what the venture means to her personally, Papadopoulos described Nostos as her first major entrepreneurial achievement.

“This is my first real business venture,” she said. “Even though I have amazing partners, it’s been incredibly empowering to look around and think, ‘We built this restaurant. We made this happen together as a team.'”

Her pride in Nostos reflects not only a continuation of her family’s long-standing tradition in hospitality, but also the beginning of a new chapter built on passion, teamwork, and authentic Greek hospitality.

Papadopoulos said one of the most rewarding parts of the journey was working alongside Alina Borys to transform an aging restaurant into something entirely new.

“Alina and I really bonded throughout the process,” she said. “We weren’t starting with a brand-new space. We inherited a restaurant that needed a lot of work, and our challenge was to breathe new life into it.”

Rather than stripping everything away, the team embraced the building’s existing character, finding creative ways to restore and reimagine what was already there.

“We worked with what we had,” Papadopoulos explained. “It pushed us to be innovative and create something beautiful from the space’s original features.”

With Nostos continuing to gain momentum, Papadopoulos said the team is thrilled with the restaurant’s early success and excited about what lies ahead. Plans include introducing rotating weekly food specials, expanding their popular Greek nights, and continuing to create memorable dining experiences that keep guests coming back for authentic Greek food, hospitality, and celebration.

Source: thenationalherald Edited By Bernie

A new Greek dining destination has arrived in New York City.
